When the star mPOP printer/cash drawer fails to open sometimes, it can be due to the Star firmware not being up to date.

To check this you need to open up the mPOP utility you installed to set up the mPOP. Head to Setting and press the Firmware Update. If there is an update there please install it. You may need to disconnect/reconnect to bluetooth as part of the process.
